On September 14, 2026, HOCS brought together smallholder farmers from Ugunja, Siaya County for a hands-on training session on organic composting and circular resource use — part of our ongoing effort to build climate-smart, resilient agricultural practices in the communities we serve.
The session covered practical composting techniques, the use of frass fertilizers, and sustainable water management systems that farmers can implement with locally available materials, reducing dependence on costly synthetic inputs.
"Since applying what I learned about composting, my vegetable yields have improved and I no longer need to buy as much fertilizer," shared one participating farmer from the Ugunja area.
Facilitators also introduced farmers to value addition techniques for African indigenous and exotic vegetables, helping them access better markets and increase household incomes. The training is part of HOCS's broader climate-smart agriculture program, which aims to enhance food security and nutritional diversity across our operating counties.
Participants left with starter composting kits and a follow-up schedule for field visits, where HOCS staff will provide ongoing support as farmers put their new skills into practice on their own plots.
This training is one of several planned sessions rolling out across Siaya, Kisii, Homa-Bay, Kwale and Nakuru counties throughout the year, supporting our objective to train farmers and youth on sustainable vegetable production, value addition and agribusiness.
Climate-smart agriculture is at the core of what HOCS does — helping farmers build resilience while improving their livelihoods.
We are grateful to everyone who attended, and to our donors and partners whose support makes these trainings possible. If you would like to support future sessions, please see our Causes page or get in touch via our Contact page.

Great to see this kind of practical training reaching farmers directly. Composting has made a real difference on my plot this season.
